Nils Aslak Valkeapää (1943-2001) was beyond a doubt one of Sámilands most prominent writers, famous far beyond its borders, not only within the nordic countries but equally acclaimed internationally. He was a multigifted artist positioning himself in disciplines such as yoiking - traditional singing, modern singing, composing, painting and acting. He was awarded with the Nordic literature prize in 2001 for the poetbook Beaivi, áhčážan (The Sun, My Father), and Prix Italia for his bird symphony Goase dušše i 1993.
